Abstract:

121 8x10 inch photographs formerly bound in two binders, depicting facilities, equipment, staff, and operations of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company, chiefly in San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley. Offices, staff lounges, switchboards and operators, machine shops, cable and cable-laying activity, and some staff photographs are included. A few views relate to buildings damaged in the 1906 earthquake. Also present are 37 snapshots and 18 film negatives in a smaller format, taken in May 1906 of earthquake and fire damage in San Francisco. Some street kitchen views are included. Negatives do not correspond to prints. One negative of Joaquin Miller with Bob McKim is present.

There is no obvious relationship between the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph photographs and the 1906 earthquake snapshots. They were received from the same seller, but their earlier provenance is unknown. On the snapshots, the names Bob McKim and J.B. Hussey are noted, who may be relations or associates of the photographer or owner.
